The owner moved away for a couple of years, but now she’s back and Solitary Swan is too, only now it’s next door in Scarborough Lane. This shop sells items you won’t find anywhere else, including garden accessories, home accessories, folk art, decoys, porcelain, retro tin signs and original wood signs. SunScents is candle shop representing about 30 brands of candles in addition to the candles that owner Chuck Sowers makes at his Kitty Hawk studio. Chuck creates handmade seashell candles from shells he finds here on the Outer Banks. The shop also represents local artists, including Chuck’s wife, who creates hand-rolled grapevine wreaths embellished with seashells, as well as the beach glass jewelry line from Beachcomber Jewelry, made with locally harvested beach glass. SunScents has expanded into somewhat of a spa shop as well, offering bath and body products like lotions, bubble baths, bath salts and the full line of Burt’s Bees products.

Concentrating on tanning only, this salon offers seven beds and four different tanning options, from lay-down to standing, from slow tanning to the mega-bed. A safer alternative is the Mystic Tan UV-free spray-tanning. Mystic was the inventor of spray-tanning and they’ve sprayed more than 15 million people. This fudge must be good: The Fudgery started on the Outer Banks in 1980 and now has a veritable fudge empire of 30 stores around the country, including another one in Duck!
