Aura Beauty Bazaar

Aura Beauty Bazaar is a super-girly, upscale beauty boutique. It’s the only place on the Outer Banks to find Smashbox cosmetics, Peter Thomas Roth skincare and ME! Bath products, plus you’ll find hundreds of colors of nail polish, fragrances, vintage dresses and—get this!—an eyelash bar featuring 48 different styles of eyelashes. This is not a beauty salon, but owner Tamara Van Kirk does offer airbrush makeup, airbrush tanning and free makeup application every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Van Kirk has been in the cosmetics industry for years and says she has done more than a thousand faces. She invites women to her store to experiment and play with a new look. She’s open only from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Get the ultimate vacation souvenir with a colorful hairwrap, some cornrows or a temporary tattoo. Beach Braids is the only Outer Banks shop offering natural henna tattoos in addition to black henna tattoos. Natural henna is a reddish-brown color instead of black. Beach Braids has a Mendhi artist on staff, and they also offer “Hollywood” tattoos with a wide range of designs. This store also sells custom, handmade jewelry. Beach Braids is professional and organized with a skilled staff and comfortable waiting area. Appointments or walk-ins are accepted, and large groups can easily be accommodated. This business is open in the spring and summer season only. They also have a studios in Nags Head and Corolla.

This gallery is filled with a wide variety of oil paintings, so many that you’re sure to find one you like. Beach Petites moved from its location in Kill Devil Hills to Duck in 2010. This shop offers casual clothing and accessories, mostly in petite sizes. Donna Designs is known for its popular wearable art that is hand-painted one piece at a time in an Outer Banks studio. Each year designer Donna Haddon’s original beach-inspired designs enhance top-quality women’s, kids’ and babies’ clothing. Her designs generally have a fun, coastal theme — turtles, fish, crabs — but the end result is definitely a cut above souvenir standards. In a brand-new building in the heart of Duck across from Nags Head Hammocks, Duck Village Outfitters is Duck’s original surf shop. DVO offers bike, kayak and surf rentals, including body and skim boards and wetsuits. They also offer kayak tours and surf lessons. Greenleaf is a showcase gallery of fine art and craft. It’s owned by Outer Banks painter Rick Tupper and his wife, Didi, whose knowledge of art and craft is well-respected. This independent neighborhood bookshop beats those mega-stores hands down. The service is impeccable and the selection is great. All subjects are covered, including a good variety of fiction, local and regional books, children’s books, cookbooks, mysteries and more. New York Times Bestsellers hardbacks are discounted. Plus there are audio books, puzzles and greeting cards. If you can’t find what you want, special orders are welcomed and are prompt.
